Addressing the problem of code (as a concept) also means addressing the problem of meaning. A code always carries some meaning; otherwise, it wouldn’t function. But do all codes truly have meaning? Clearly, no. One might even argue that, intuitively, all these codes—including our genetic codes—are devoid of meaning. Except, of course, the meaning that we, for better or worse, decide to assign to them. It is probably this last aspect that lies at the heart of this exercise, which bridges the gap between comic books, literature, and computer programming.
